Breast augmentation: implants or lipofilling?
To increase breast volume, two main approaches exist: breast implants and lipofilling, that is, transferring your own fat. They do not suit exactly the same situations. The choice depends on your expectations, your body type, the fat available and the surgeon's advice after a clinical examination. This article compares the two without pitting them against each other artificially. It does not replace a consultation.

Two approaches, one goal
In both cases, the aim is to increase volume and sometimes to reshape the breasts. The difference lies in what is added: a silicone prosthesis for implants, or your own fatty tissue for lipofilling.
Implants
Augmentation with implants provides immediate, predictable volume, which can suit those who want a marked increase or whose fat reserve is insufficient. The implant position (in front of or behind the muscle) is decided case by case. An implant is not a permanent device: it warrants monitoring over time and, sometimes, replacement. The procedure leaves a scar, whose location is chosen to stay discreet.
Lipofilling
Breast lipofilling harvests fat by liposuction, where it is in excess, to reinject it into the breasts. As it is your own tissue, the result is often felt to be natural, and the donor area is refined in the process. In return, the volume gain per session is limited, part of the fat resorbs in the first weeks, and the technique requires sufficient donor areas. Several sessions are sometimes needed.
The composite option
When you want volume while keeping a natural result, it is sometimes possible to combine the two: an implant covered with a layer of fat. This composite approach is discussed according to body type and goals.
How to choose?
The choice depends mainly on the volume you want, your body type, the fat available and how you feel about the idea of an implant. No technique is "better" in absolute terms: the right option is the one that matches your situation, defined after a clinical examination. No result can be guaranteed.
Frequently asked questions
Can lipofilling achieve a large volume?
The gain per session stays moderate and part of the fat resorbs. For a large volume, implants or the composite approach are often more suitable.
Do implants need to be replaced?
Implants are not considered permanent. They require monitoring and, in some cases, replacement over the years.
Which technique is the most natural?
Lipofilling often gives a very natural texture. A well-chosen, well-positioned implant can also give a natural result: it depends a lot on the starting body type.
