Mommy makeover: restoring your shape after pregnancy

Pregnancy and breastfeeding sometimes leave lasting changes to the belly, the breasts and the overall silhouette, beyond what exercise and diet can correct. The term "mommy makeover" refers to a treatment that combines, according to each patient's needs, several aesthetic surgery procedures. It is not a single standardised operation, but a plan tailored case by case. This article offers markers and does not replace personalised medical advice.

What does it involve?

A mommy makeover most often combines an abdominal component, a breast component and, if needed, targeted liposuction. The choice of procedures, their order and their number depend on your anatomy, your expectations and your health, assessed in consultation.

The abdominal component: skin, fat and diastasis

After pregnancy, the abdomen may show excess skin, localised fat and a diastasis: a separation of the rectus abdominis muscles along the linea alba, which shows as a slackening of the mid-abdomen, sometimes more visible when sitting or on effort. An abdominoplasty aims to remove the excess skin and, depending on the case, to tighten this wall. When the excess is limited and located below the navel, a mini tummy tuck may sometimes be enough.

The breast component

Breasts often change after pregnancy and breastfeeding: loss of volume, sagging (ptosis), or both. Depending on the situation, options include a breast lift to raise the breasts, an augmentation with implants or by fat grafting, or a combination of these.

The silhouette: targeted liposuction

A liposuction can refine areas where fat resists diet and exercise (waist, hips, back). It often complements the abdominal component to harmonise the contour, when clinical examination justifies it.

All at once, or in stages?

Some combinations can be done during a single procedure; others are spread over several stages, often a few months apart. The choice depends on the extent of the procedures, the operating time and your safety. Grouping them limits the number of anaesthetics and the total downtime, but it is not always the most suitable option. No result can be guaranteed: the plan is discussed together.

When to consider it?

A mommy makeover is generally considered once you have finished having children and your weight is stable, some time after breastfeeding. A later pregnancy can indeed alter the result. The right timing is decided in consultation.

Recovery and aftercare

The recovery depends on the procedures performed. Wearing compression, relative rest and following the instructions all support recovery. Scars, present depending on the procedures, are placed to stay discreet and fade over time. The return to activity varies from one person to another.

Frequently asked questions

Can everything be done in a single procedure?

Sometimes, depending on the extent of the procedures and your health. In other cases, it is safer to proceed in several stages, a few months apart.

Should I wait until I have finished having children?

It is often advised, because a later pregnancy can alter the result, particularly on the belly and breasts.

Are there scars?

Yes, depending on the procedures performed. Their location is chosen to make them as discreet as possible, and their appearance improves over the months.
