Ultrasonic (piezo) rhinoplasty: what the technology changes

Ultrasonic, or piezoelectric, rhinoplasty uses an ultrasonic instrument to reshape the bony part of the nose. It is not a different operation from rhinoplasty, but a finer way of working the bone. This article explains what the technology changes, and what it does not. It does not replace personalised medical advice.

What is ultrasonic rhinoplasty?

The instrument, called a piezotome, emits ultrasonic vibrations that act on hard tissue (the bone) while sparing the soft tissue: mucosa, vessels and soft cartilage. Instead of fracturing the bone, it cuts it in a more gradual and controlled way.

What ultrasound changes

• more precise work on the bony hump and the nasal pyramid, with the surgeon seeing more clearly what is being sculpted ;
• less trauma to the soft tissue, which, according to several studies, is often accompanied by less swelling and bruising ;
• sometimes a more comfortable recovery, though not systematically.

What the technique does not change

Ultrasonic rhinoplasty remains a real surgical procedure. Swelling and the final result still take several weeks to several months to appear. Work on the cartilage uses other techniques. Finally, the indication and feasibility are assessed case by case, and no result can be guaranteed. The general principles of rhinoplasty still apply.

Who is it for?

The ultrasonic approach is mainly useful when there is bony work to do, for example a hump to reduce or a pyramid to refine. The surgeon judges its relevance according to the structure of your nose and your goals.

Recovery and aftercare

A splint is usually placed for a few days. Swelling decreases gradually over the following weeks, while the final result takes shape over time, often several months later. Recovery varies from one person to another and follows specific instructions.

Is there really less bruising and swelling?

Several studies report less bruising and swelling with ultrasound. This still varies depending on the person and the extent of the work done.

Is it a non-surgical technique?

No. "Less invasive" refers to the work on the bone, not to the absence of a procedure: it is indeed surgery, with anaesthesia and a recovery period.

Is the result visible straight away?

No. Swelling masks the result at first. The final outcome is assessed after several months, once the tissues have stabilised.
